A Router-Aided Hierarchical P2P Traffic Localization Based on Variable Additional Delay Insertion
نویسندگان
چکیده
Most peer-to-peer (P2P) systems build their own overlay networks for implementing peer selection strategies without taking into account the locality on the underlay network. As a result, a large quantity of traffic crossing internet service providers (ISPs) or autonomous systems (ASes) is generated on the Internet. Controlling the P2P traffic is therefore becoming a big challenge for the ISPs. To control the cost of the crossISP/AS traffic, ISPs often throttle and/or even block P2P applications in their networks. In this paper, we propose a router-aided approach for localizing the P2P traffic hierarchically; it features the insertion of additional delay into each P2P packet based on geographical location of its destination. Compared to the existing approaches that solve the problem on the application layer, our proposed method does not require dedicated servers, cooperation between ISPs and P2P users, or modification of existing P2P application software. Therefore, the proposal can be easily utilized by all types of P2P applications. Experiments on P2P streaming applications indicate that our hierarchical traffic localization method not only reduces significantly the inter-domain traffic but also maintains a good performance of P2P applications. key words: P2P, router-aided approach, hierarchical traffic localization, delay insertion

ISP-aided Biased Query Search for P2P systems in a Testlab
More than half of Internet traffic today is contributed by peer-to-peer (P2P) systems. P2P systems build their overlay topology largely agnostic of the Internet underlay, which often leads to traffic management challenges for Internet Service Providers (ISP) and potentially inefficient neighborhood selection for P2P nodes. To overcome this, we propose to use an oracle hosted by the ISPs, so tha...

Wireless network-on-chip (WiNoC) is considered as a novel approach for designing future multi-core systems. In WiNoCs, wireless routers (WRs) utilize high-bandwidth wireless links to reduce the transmission delay between the long distance nodes. When the network traffic loads increase, a large number of packets will be sent into the wired and wireless links and can...
متن کاملLANC: locality-aware network coding for better P2P traffic localization
As ISPs begin to cooperate to expose their network locality information as services, e.g., P4P, solutions based on locality information provision for P2P traffic localization will soon approach their capability limits. A natural question is: can we do any better provided that no further locality information improvement can be made? This paper shows how the utility of locality information could ...
متن کاملA Novel Caching Strategy in Video-on-Demand (VoD) Peer-to-Peer (P2P) Networks Based on Complex Network Theory
The popularity of video-on-demand (VoD) streaming has grown dramatically over the World Wide Web. Most users in VoD P2P networks have to wait a long time in order to access their requesting videos. Therefore, reducing waiting time to access videos is the main challenge for VoD P2P networks. In this paper, we propose a novel algorithm for caching video based on peers' priority and video's popula...

This paper shows the design and performance of an AQM (Active Queue Management) enabled router. The design is based on a classical proportional control system. The application of such a router is to enhance streaming media over IP performance by avoiding bursty packet drop situations, control the router queue delay, and balancing packet drop, delay, and link utilization. The selected AQM equili...
